In Contention for the Inaugural Rolex ANNIKA AwardMichelle Wie of the United States poses with the trophy after her two-stroke victory at the 69th U.S. Women's Open at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. July 7 2014, Nicklaus Parker Five or less players will be in contention for the inaugural Rolex ANNIKA Major Award when the LPGA major season wraps up at this season's last major, the Evian Championship, but the race is already beginning to thin, the frontrunners leaving the wannabe hopefuls behind. The award given out to the season’s top performer in the five major championships requires a win in one of the five events, so only Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie are up for the award at this point via their wins at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and U.S. Women’s Open, respectively. Wie’s had as close to ideal of a major season as one could get without two wins with a runner-up at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and a two-shot win at the U.S. Women’s Open. As a result, Wie – perhaps the comeback player of the year on tour this season – leads Thompson by 16 points. Thompson actually sat in second at the U.S. Women’s Open – just three shots shy of Wie – and looked like she might start the year off with back-to-back wins but faltered to a tie for 7th after weekend rounds of 74-71. Just like always, Rolex Rankings No. 1 Stacy Lewis isn’t out of it either. She needs a win to carve her name into consideration, she’s only 42 points back of Wie and 26 of Thompson after a third and a second-place finish to start her major season. A win – worth 60 points – would guarantee Lewis at least a share of the top spot of the points as long as Wie doesn’t take second. Lewis and Thompson are the only ones within 60 points of Wie, which comes as little surprise considering the trio are the top 3 in the point standings for the Rolex Player of the Year. Stephanie Meadows, who wasn’t in the field at the Kraft to open the year, vaulted into fourth in the standings via a third-place finish at the U.S. Women’s Opening. However, the recently turned pro is in the Final Qualifying Tournament for the Women’s British Open on Monday and will have to play her way into the field. Amy Yang (16), Cristie Kerr (14), Se Ri Pak (14), So Yeon Ryu (12), Meena Lee (12), and Shanshan Feng (10) are the only other players with double-digit points. Three Sit at the Top of the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award StandingsLexi Thompson high fives with fans as she walks past the grandstand on her way to the 18th green during the final round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club on April 6, 2014 in Rancho Mirage August 12 2014, Nicklaus Parker
PITTSFORD, NY - Just as it should be, the three major champions sit at the top of the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award standings with Michelle Wie in first, Lexi Thompson in second, and Mo Martin in third heading into the fourth major of the year – The Wegmans LPGA Championship. But the inaugural award, which requires a player to have a major win to be under consideration, is there for the taking with Wie – the leader at 84 points – on the shelf this week with a stress reaction in her right index finger. As a result, Lexi Thompson – winner of the season’s first major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship – is the leader in the field with 68 points and has a chance to make a major move with Wie’s status also in doubt for the fifth and final major of the season, the Evian Championship. Needing a tie for third or better to pass Wie this week, Thompson’s length will be a major advantage on the 6,717 yard layout as she’ll have shorter irons into the crowned, undulating greens of the Donald Ross designed Monroe Golf Club. Martin jumped squarely into contention with her win at the Ricoh Women’s British Open behind the shot of the year – an eagle on the last that thumped the flag and thrust her straight into the limelight. However, Martin enters the week with injury woes as well after withdrawing from the Meijer Classic as well with a wrist injury. She’s here this week but will she be able to play? And if she does, will she be effective? There’s the distance factor with Martin, too. At only 233.6 yards per drive, will she have the length needed to effectively tame one of the longer layouts players will see all year? Therefore, the award is wide open for the taking, and no one is a bigger threat than world No. 1 Stacy Lewis. The three-time winner on Tour this season sits fourth in the standings with 42 points after finishing third in the season’s first major and second at the U.S. Women’s Open. A win would vault her into first in the standings even if Thompson finishes second, and Lewis’ game is tailor made for majors. She’s first on tour in scoring average, putts per green in regulation, birdies, rounds under par, and third in greens in regulation. Shanshan Feng (34 points) and Suzann Pettersen (24 points) finished in a tied for second at the Ricoh Women’s British Open – one shot back of Martin – and a win this week would push both into first if Thompson doesn’t finish second. Angela Stanford (20), Stephanie Meadow (18), Amy Yang (16), and Inbee Park (14) round out the top-10 in the standings. Who will win the inaugural Rolex ANNIKA Major Award?September 10 2014, Nicklaus Parker On the 18th green Sunday at the Evian Resort Golf Club, two winners will be crowned – one the newest major champion, the other the inaugural Rolex ANNIKA Major Award champion. That person could of course be one in the same. Four majors in, the contenders have been established. What should be eight players vying for the award on Sunday is now seven as Ricoh Women’s British Open Champion Mo Martin, currently fourth in the standings with 60 points, is out of the Evian Championship with an untimely thumb injury. The leader in the point standings Michelle Wie (84 points) is actually returning from a finger issue of her own that forced her to the sidelines for a shade over a month, missing the season’s last major – the Wegmans LPGA Championship. “As soon as I heard it in a meeting that we’re going to have this award, this has definitely been one of my biggest goals,” said Wie. “Unfortunately I didn’t play so well at the British and had to miss the last major, so I’m really thankful that there’s a fifth major, and I have a good chance this week. So I’m going to play extra hard this week and see what I can do.” Could the first-time award really have worked out any better? The four players with the chance to guarantee both trophies on Sunday with a win? World No. 1 Stacy Lewis, No. 2 Inbee Park, No. 6 Michelle Wie and No. 7 Lexi Thompson. In other words, arguably the four biggest names in the game. And everyone wants to be connected to the award presented by arguably the greatest the women’s game’s ever seen. “I’ve always looked up to Annika. She’s always been a huge role model to me, so it would mean a lot to win that award,” Thompson said. “I’m just going to go out there and try to do my best and see where it goes.” Park, the latest major champion, was just wishing the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award had been handed out a year prior because she’d already have one hanging in her trophy case after winning three consecutive majors a year ago. “I really like the competition, and this award is going to mean a lot to everyone, and everyone sitting here has a chance,” said Park, who sits in second in the standings with 74 points. “They’re going to play very hard as well, so yeah, that really encourages me to play well as well. It’s going to mean a lot to everyone, so hopefully I can do my best here.” Outside of those four, Shanshan Feng, Suzann Pettersen, and Brittany Lincicome could theoretically stake claim but would need help. Feng would need Wie to finish worse than second. Pettersen would be looking for a finish worse than fifth from Wie and worse than second from Park. Lincicome can only tie Wie with a win. Who had the season’s best year in majors? Final answer is coming Sunday. Link to Article:www.lpga.com/golf/news/2014/9/rolex-annika-major-evian.aspx

If you've read the update on The Annika ROLEX Award or not, they have decided that if Lincicome Wins: "If Lincicome can capture a victory at the Evian Championship and Inbee Park finishes worse than fifth, Lincicome would walk away with the inaugural Rolex ANNIKA Major Award. Although Lincicome would be tied for the lead in points (84) with Wie, she would win by the tiebreaker. Both Wie and Lincicome would each have one win and one runner-up finish this year in majors, but Wie did not post another finish at the majors this season while Lincicome had a T15 finish at the U.S. Women’s Open"
I thinks there is a problem with this statement because they are saying the win will be decided by Lincicome's T-15 in another tournament major finish. There are no points for a T-15 only 2 points for a T-10. They would be giving Lincicome points that don't exist. It's either decided by points or it's not. Just my opinion. And not certain this was decided beforehand in the event of a tie or they came up with this at the last minute. There are no points for a T-15 in the list of points. Anyone else have an opinion or comment, in case you didn't know this was possibly happening if Lincicome wins the tournament as they say.

Anyone else have an opinion or comment, in case you didn't know this was possibly happening if Lincicome wins the tournament as they say. I contacted the LPGA about this and they came right back with these remarks: "Thanks so much for your email and your question! While points are only awarded for top-10 finishes, in the event there is a tie in the points, we have a pre-determined tie-breaker which I have cut and pasted below for you –" "In the event of a tie in total points after the final Major Championship of the season, the award will be given to the Player with the most Major Championship wins. If there is the same number of wins, the award will be given to the Player with the most second-place Major Championship finishes; if there is the same number of second place finishes, the tie will be broken by the most third-place Major Championship finishes. This pattern will continue until the tie is broken." Thus, if Brittany Lincicome and Michelle Wie tie with 84 points, Brittany Lincicome would win the award. Both players would have one win, one second, and then the tie would be broken with Brittany’s tie for 15th at the USWO. For Michelle, she has one missed cut, had one wd and one major she did not play."

Wie wins inaugural Annika Major AwardMichelle Wie didn’t make it to the end of the Evian Championship’s first round due to injury, but she walked away Sunday with a prestigious new trophy anyway. Wie, who withdrew from Evian after 13 holes on Thursday after reinjuring the index finger of her right hand, won the inaugural Rolex Annika Major Award as the best overall player in women’s major championships this year. She won the award despite missing most of the final two majors. She didn’t play the Wegmans LPGA Championship last month due to the finger injury “It’s pretty crazy,” Wie told media in France upon accepting the ward Sunday. “I entered this week just grateful I had a chance. I really am very surprised, too, very happy.” The award, named after Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, is points based, with top-10 finishes in majors earning points. Wie won on the strength of her U.S. Women’s Open victory and her second-place finish at the Kraft Nabisco. Wie didn’t earn a point after the first two majors of the year. She missed the cut at the Ricoh Women’s British Open and then struggled with the finger injury after, but she finished with 84 points, besting Inbee Park by 10. A major championship victory was worth 60 points. The winner had to win a major to be qualified. Wie said she will undergo an MRI on her injured finger upon returning to the United States. She first hurt herself hitting out of a divot at the Marathon Classic in late July. She was diagnosed with a “stress reaction” to the bone of the finger. She said she hopes to return to play at the Reignwood LPGA Classic Oct. 2-5 in China, the start of the fall Asian swing. “I’m planning to play China, but if the MRI shows otherwise, I will have to take more weeks off,” Wie said. “I’m hoping for the best.”Link to Article:www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/wie-wins-inaugural-annika-major-award/
