Wie, Creamer continue to struggle at Evian

So much for building some Solheim
Cup momentum.

Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie’s struggles continued Thursday at the Evian Championship, where they both opened with over-par rounds and now are in danger of missing another cut.
Creamer, a controversial captain’s pick for next week’s matches in Germany, bogeyed three of her last five holes and shot 74. Wie made five bogeys and a double during an opening 75. When they finished their rounds, Creamer and Wie were 72nd and 82nd, respectively.
Entering this week, Creamer had missed three consecutive cuts and had just one top-10 finish in her last eight starts. Wie, meanwhile, has been plagued by injuries all season. She withdrew from the Women’s British Open in late July because of a left ankle injury.
In addition to the two U.S. stars’ struggles, Stacy Lewis (73), Cristie Kerr (75) and Angela Stanford (78) all got off to rough starts in the final major of the year.
But Thursday wasn’t all bad news for the American team’s Solheim Cup prospects.
The European Solheim Cuppers were a combined 19 over par on Day 1, while the Americans were only 6 over. Lexi Thompson led the way at the Evian with a 5-under 66, while Gerina Piller, Morgan Pressel, Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome were also in red numbers in the opening round.

As Solheim looms, Wie rallies, Creamer MCs again

Michelle Wie rallied Friday while Paula Creamer and Caroline Hedwall continued to struggle with the shadow of the Solheim Cup falling harder over the Evian Championship.

Wie shot a 5-under-par 66 in the second round, sending signals she is finding improved form to take to next week’s biennial international team competition in Germany. The American straddled the cut line after opening the Evian Championship with a 75 but bounced back to easily make it into the weekend. She showed no signs that her left hip, ankle and knee are still bothering her.
Creamer and Hedwall, two Solheim Cup stars important to past successes of their respective teams, continued troubling funks with both missing the cut at Evian Resort Golf Club.
Creamer, the American, shot 78 Friday to miss her fourth consecutive cut. Her round was derailed early when she followed bogeys at the second and third holes with a quadruple-bogey 8 at the fourth. She missed the cut by five shots.
Creamer was named one of Juli Inkster’s two captain’s picks after failing to automatically qualify for the American team for the first time. Creamer, 29, has won more Solheim Cup points than any other American on this year’s roster. She’s 12-6-5 in five previous appearances, but she will head to Germany looking to turn around a late summer swoon. She shot 81 at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open to miss the cut in her last start before the American captain’s picks were named.
Inkster, by the way, shot 68 Friday and made the cut. The 55-year-old Hall of Famer sits T-37, better than six of the Americans on her team.
Hedwall, 26, shot 79 Friday after opening Evian with a 69. She missed the cut by a shot. Hedwall has been important to Europe’s success winning the last two Solheim Cups. In Europe’s record rout at the Colorado Golf Club two years ago, she became the first player to go 5-0 in Solheim Cup history. In Europe’s victory in Ireland four years ago, she was a vital part of the late rally that helped the Europeans win. Hedwall is one of Carin Koch’s four captain’s picks. She has missed the cut in five of her last seven starts, including last week’s Helsingborg Open in her native Sweden.
Overall, four players from each of the 12-member American and European Solheim Cup teams missed the cut. On the American side, Brittany Lincicome, Angela Stanford and Brittany Lang joined Creamer failing to make the weekend. On the Euro side, Azahara Munoz, Melissa Reid and Caroline Masson joined Hedwall missing the cut.
Morgan Pressel leads the American effort at Evian. She enters the weekend second behind the leader, Mi Hyang Lee. Lexi Thompson is tied for fifth, Alison Lee is tied for 15th and Wie is tied for 20th. Karine Icher leads the European effort. She’s tied for 11th. Charley Hull is tied for 15th.
