History: This event was added to the official LPGA Tour schedule in 1994 and became a major championship in 2001.
In 2014, Mo Martin had yet to record an eagle on the LPGA Tour this season. The diminutive 5-foot-2 golfer isn’t known for her length but instead for her accuracy. Yet on the 72nd hole of one of golf’s biggest stages, the girl known as “Mighty Mo” delivered a shot for the ages that resulted in an eagle and made her a major champion. On the par-5 18th at Royal Birkdale, Martin hit a three-wood that struck the pin. It left her with a six-foot putt for eagle and put Martin in the clubhouse at 1-under-par. With three of the best players in the game still on the course with a few holes remaining, Martin had to sit and wait for an hour before learning that she was the 2014 RICOH Women’s British Open champion.

The 2015 Ricoh Women's British Open will be played 30 July – 2 August at the Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It is the 40th Women's British Open, and the 15th as a major championship on the LPGA Tour. It is the second Women's British Open at Turnberry, with the only other being thirteen years earlier in 2002. As was the case in 2002, the third and fourteenth holes, usually Par-4 holes, are played as Par-5 holes during this event.

Michelle Wie faces uncertainty with leg injury at Women’s British Open

TURNBERRY, Scotland – Michelle Wie pulled up her pant leg a few inches to reveal the “terminator brace” on her left leg. She flew to Scotland on Sunday for the Ricoh Women’s British Open after hitting only a handful of shots at her home in Jupiter, Fla., while wearing a protective boot.
“This is the first time I’ve hit shots in two weeks,” Wie said after finishing a range session at Trump Turnberry on the southwest Scottish coast. “Obviously I wish this week was one week farther away.”
It’s hard to know what to expect from the injury-laden Wiesy. She bravely limped to an 11th-place finish at the U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club three weeks ago, and then promptly withdrew from the Marathon Classic the next week.
Wie consulted with three doctors, including hip and foot specialists, before deciding to rest from the lingering bursitis in her left hip and a bone spur in her left ankle. It’s sometimes easy to forget that she’s only 25.
David Leadbetter, Wie’s longtime instructor, said one doctor advocated surgery, while the other two said she didn’t need it. Leadbetter said his wife, Kelly, had a bone removed from a foot while competing on the LPGA and that she never was the same player.
It’s a risk that Wie refused to take.
Back on the range, where her mother, Bo, was layering up to combat the cold wind and rain, Wie struck one-handed drives with her left hand. It’s a drill she and Leadbetter devised after the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open and used it throughout the week.
“When she swings it with the left hand, she hits every position that we’re looking for,” Leadbetter said. “She really loves the feel. She has really simplified her mechanical approach.”
Leadbetter spent the first half of Monday with Wie and then transitioned to Lydia Ko in the afternoon. At last year’s Women’s British, where Wie was recovering from a thumb injury, Leadbetter talked about how he feared an overworked Ko, now 18 and in her second season as a professional, might burn out quickly. At Turnberry, he again brought up the dangers that young prodigies face as they grow older, noting that we are now only beginning to see the toll of specialization. It’s of special concern for those who, like Ko, grew up pounding balls off of mats.
“You wonder what that does to the body over the long haul,” he said. “It’s a very unnatural thing to do, pounding balls from a very young age.
“Physios and trainers are going to be working overtime on these players, in my opinion.”
Before she left for Scotland, Wie sent Leadbetter video of her hitting a couple of shots in her boot. The air boot, Leadbetter said, really stabilized her swing. He joked that they might have to market the boot as a new training aid.
“The strange thing is that with her ankle injury, it’s actually calmed her leg action down,” Leadbetter said. “You go way back to Ben Hogan ... He played his best golf after the (near-fatal 1949 car) accident because ... he couldn’t drive and fire his hips as actively.”
Wie can’t go at it as hard, Leadbetter said, and the result has been a beautiful rhythm and a straight tee ball. That’s key on a links track such as Trump Turnberry, where fairway bunkers are so penal.
“She looks really, really good,” Leadbetter said. “You know the old saying, ‘Beware of the injured golfer.’ ”
Wie spent most of the past two weeks with her foot up. She did, however, go to the gym every day to keep her core and upper body engaged. She drew inspiration from watching the men tackle the Old Course two weeks ago in the British Open at St. Andrews.
Wie limps sometimes when she walks and occasionally winces after a full swing. The pain is at its worst when she has to swing through the ball on an uphill lie.
“I’ve come into this week knowing that it’s going to hurt,” Wie said. “I’m good at playing through pain.
“I’m positive that I will play through 72 holes.”

Booting up: Wie gets another injury aid

TURNBERRY, Scotland – Michelle Wie isn’t using duct tape to keep her injured body parts together at this week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open, but her doctors have been busy coming up with other ways to help keep her playing.
Wie walked into her news conference Tuesday at Trump Turnberry wearing a protective boot on her left foot, doctor’s orders to help mend her newest injury, a bone spur. To get ready this week, she also had a platelet-rich-plasma injection in the foot and a cortisone shot for her still ailing left hip.
“I’m just taking it day by day,” Wie said.
Wie finished 11th in her title defense at the U.S. Women’s Open three weeks ago despite limping through obvious pain. She withdrew before teeing it up at the Marathon Classic the following week after meeting with hip and foot specialists at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Wie arrived at Turnberry on Sunday.
“When I got out here, it was really the first time I hit balls since [the U.S. Women’s Open],” Wie said. “So, just kind of shaking off the rust, but it’s been feeling pretty good. So, I’m excited to play.”
Wie won’t be playing in that protective boot, though she played the U.S. Women’s Open in an ankle brace.
About that boot ...
“It’s a new fashion,” Wie cracked. “It’s just doctor’s orders. He wants me to be in the boot when I’m not playing, just so I can rest it. It’s more a preventive thing.”
Wie said playing on the hills at Lancaster Country Club set her back at the U.S. Women’s Open. She probably wouldn’t be playing this week if it weren’t a major.
“We’ll see once I get done with this week, what the future plans are,” Wie said. “I’m just going to take it day by day. My doctor said I might feel better all of a sudden one day, waking up one morning. I’m really hoping for that.”
Wie was diagnosed with bursitis in her left hip after withdrawing from the Kingsmill Championship in the middle of May. She’s also been struggling with pain in her left knee and left ankle, joints that have endured wear and tear as shock absorbers of her powerful swing. The bone spur in the left foot was a newly diagnosed malady after the U.S. Women’s Open.
