JTBC Founders Cup, Phoenix, Arizona…Mar 19-22History: This is the fifth year for the event. Race to the CME Globe: 500 points Purse: $1,500,000 Format: 72 holes Charity: The LPGA Foundation, LPGA-USGA Girls Golf 2014 - Karrie Webb has always been one of the most ardent supporters of honoring the history of the LPGA and its 13 Founders. So it’s perfectly fitting that on Sunday, she became the first two-time winner of the JTBC Founders Cup. The LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame member fired a 9-under 63 in Sunday’s final round to capture a one-shot victory at the JTBC Founders Cup. Webb came from six shots back to defeat third-round leader Lydia Ko and four other players who finished at 18-under-par, including defending champion Stacy Lewis. This is Webb’s 41st career LPGA Tour victory, which moved her into a tie for 10th on the LPGA’s all-time win list with Founder Babe Zaharias. Wie hoping her game returns as sickness leavesBy Randall Mell March 17, 2015, 7:56 pm PHOENIX, Ariz. – Michelle Wie doesn’t need a caddie these days as much as she does a nurse. There’s nothing wrong with her game that a dose of antibiotics shouldn’t eventually fix. That’s what her swing coach, David Leadbetter, believes as Wie prepares to begin the LPGA’s West Coast swing in the JTBC Founders Cup at the Marriott Wildfire Golf Club. “Michelle’s had a pretty slow start to the year, but she’s been pretty sick,” Leadbetter said after watching Wie in a practice round Tuesday. “She’s been sick for a month.” It turns out those “flu-like symptoms” Wie played with at the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic was actually strep throat, which she took with her on the tour’s Asian swing, where it morphed into a sinus infection. “The doctor said that I probably won’t be feeling 100 percent for the next couple weeks,” Wie said. “I’m feeling a lot better, thankfully, but it’s been tough. Right now, my No. 1 priority is just getting my health back in order.” Expectations were ratcheted up again for Wie entering this year. Coming off last year’s U.S. Women’s Open victory at Pinehurst and her victory at the Lotte Championship, Wie seemed poised for more success. She looked ready to make a run at the Rolex world No. 1 ranking. She was playing that well through the middle of last year. But then late last July, there was a finger injury, a “stress reaction” to the bone of the index finger of her right hand. It kept her out of action for about two months. Then, after taking a long six-week break in the off season, there is this lingering illness. In four starts this year, Wie doesn’t have a top-10 or even top-20 finish. She missed the cut in the Bahamas, where she felt most ill. Wie, 25, isn’t blaming all her sluggishness on how lousy she has been feeling. “I think, maybe, I’ve just been trying too hard,” Wie said. Wie ended last year fourth on tour in putts per greens in regulation. She was third in hitting greens in regulation and third in scoring. She’s 73rd in that putting category so far this year, 89th in hitting greens and 51st in scoring. “Winning the U.S. Open, it gave me a lot of confidence,” Wie said. “Last year, in general, definitely gave me a lot of confidence, but you always want to do better. I think as a professional athlete, if you don't have that hunger, something's not right, and I think you have to put the right balance between wanting to do better, but then sometimes . . . just trying too hard. “I think that's something I struggle with internally, is just trying too hard, and trying to make everything so perfect. I think that's what I did so well last year, is just letting go, letting go and just letting things happen.” Christina Kim, Wie’s good friend, pretty much dismisses Wie’s last month as mostly irrelevant. “I wouldn’t put any thought to her first four events of the year,” Kim said. “She was able to take a break after the end of last year, and that’s going to end up being huge. I think she’s going to have another very big year. It’s just a matter of making sure she’s rested enough.” Wie had a couple top 10s in Asia early last year, and then she got hot on the West Coast. She battled Lexi Thompson in a final-round duel at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, finishing second. In her very next start, she won the Lotte Championship in front of hometown fans in Hawaii. She won the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst six starts after that, holding off then Rolex world No. 1 Stacy Lewis in the end. “We’re focused a little bit on just reminding Michelle what she did at Pinehurst,” Leadbetter said. “She’s pretty close, so expect her to play well in the next couple weeks.” The ANA Inspiration, formerly the Kraft Nabisco, is two weeks away. Wie should be a good fit again at Mission Hills in Palm Springs. She has five top-10 finishes there, three finishes of fourth or better. “I'm definitely putting the work in,” Wie said. “That's the kind of mentality I have. I know I'm working hard. I know I'm putting in all the hours. I know that I'm doing everything I can, and when I go out there, I've just got to let things happen, and try to free things up, for sure.” With a little help from some antibiotics, Wie is hoping good things return to her game this week. David Leadbetter works with Michelle Wie prior to start of Founders CupMichelle Wie during her Tuesday press conference at the JTBC Founders Cup. ( Tracy Wilcox ) By Beth Ann Nichols Tuesday, March 17, 2015 PHOENIX, Ariz. – David Leadbetter stood next to the skybox on the 18th at Wildfire Golf Club and went over video of Michelle Wie’s swing with her father, B.J. It’s the first time he has seen the Wie family since the season-opening event in Ocala, Fla., last January. “I’m like the guy in the circus with all the plates,” said Leadbetter, who will work with six players this week. “Just keep them spinning.” Of course, in the case of Michelle, there are three plates in the air. It’s important to keep mom and dad happy, too. After walking 18 holes with Wie, Leadbetter went to the range to see top-ranked Lydia Ko. Despite a dream opening to 2015, Ko was anxious for Leadbetter to see her swing in Phoenix on Sunday, saying it felt “bad.” “I told her the swing is fine,” said Leadbetter. “Players are always walking on that sort of edge. Get up one day and it feels good, and the next day it doesn’t feel as good and you’re doing the same thing. It’s sort of the mystery of the game.” Wie told her longtime swing doctor that her iron game wasn’t too sharp. In 2014, Wie’s iron game was terrific. (She ranked third on the tour in greens in regulation.) But the artsy Wie likes to tinker with her swing, sometimes straying too far off course. “I think the problems that I encounter a lot of times is when I try to – David will attest to this, too, I like get a simple feeling,” said Wie, “and I just try to work too hard at it and then I make it complicated.” Leadbetter likes to remind her of what worked really well at Pinehurst, site of her U.S. Women’s Open victory and the “the most solid golf” she’s ever played. One move in particular, Leadbetter said, involved holding the angle longer through impact. Wie has tendency to stand up out of the shot, which results in shots flaring out to the right, or if she gets too aggressive with her hands, a hook. “She hit it really, really good out there today,” he said. One of Wie’s biggest goals in 2015 was to stay healthy. So far that’s been a significant struggle. She came down with Strep throat in the Bahamas, which turned into a sinus infection in Asia. “The doctor said that I probably won't be feeling 100 percent for the next couple of weeks,” said Wie, whose best finish so far is a T-24 at the Coates Golf Championship. “I’m feeling a lot better thankfully, but it's been tough.” In 2014, Wie said she did an unusually good job of letting go and not trying to be so perfect. This year, however, she has fallen back into the habit trying too hard. She hopes that changes going forward. “I'm kind of back in the mentality of whatever happens, happens,” said Wie. “I’m definitely putting the work in. That's the kind of mentality I have is I know I'm working hard. I know I'm putting in all the hours. I know that I'm doing everything I can, and when I just go out there, I've just got to let things happen and try to free things up.” Link to article:golfweek.com/news/2015/mar/17/michelle-wie-lpga-founders-cup-david-leadbetter-go/

"Wie drains 30-footer to make cut at Founders Cup" By Randall Mell March 21, 2015, 2:04 www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/wie-drains-30-footer-make-cut-founders-cup/This is helpful news about Michelle: "Wie has been focusing on her downswing all week. Before stepping into her address, she has been making an exaggerated motion with her left hip, thrusting it out toward the target, and following with a few pumps of her downswing." "While it may look different, Wie says it’s basically a movement she has been working on for two seasons." “Just trying to get the hip in the right place,” Wie said. “Obviously, get a little snatchy, a little quick, so just working on my tempo, slowing down my hips a little bit, and letting my body catch up.” David Leadbetter, Wie’s swing coach, says they’re trying to recreate the feeling that worked so well when she won the U.S. Women’s Open last summer. “Trying to get the feel of the lower body leading, and the lag angle being behind her,” Leadbetter said. “Her pre-shot routine is a drill, just an exaggeration of the feeling. We’re just trying to get her close to the feels she had last season.”
