BY THE NUMBERS POWERED BY LOGI ANALYTICS: MICHELLE WIEMichelle Wie of the United States hits a shot during day four of the 2014 Blue Bay LPGA at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course on October 26, 2014 in Hainan Island, China. November 3 2014, Nicklaus Parker
The typical refrain from a golfer returning from injury usually centers around knocking the rust off their games and how difficult it can be to regain their touch – both on pitches, chips and on the greens. The two months Michelle Wie took off from golf to rest a stress reaction in her index finger don’t seem to have caused any issues for hers though. The game Wie showed before the injury – the type of play that had her firmly in the running for the Rolex Player of the Year – has returned. In her three events back, Wie has finished T5, T3, and T20. There’s an illusion in golf that the tabletop putting style Wie’s adopted has been the only difference for her in 2014. That’s not entirely true. Her putting’s arguably the best it has ever been. So is her ball-striking. Driving accuracy and greens in regulation are both sitting at career levels this season. Wie’s hit it as well as anyone on Tour in 2014, sitting second on the Tour in greens in regulation behind only Suzann Pettersen. Her putting’s played the part, too, sitting fourth on the Tour in putts per GIR – arguably a better indicator of a player’s putting acumen than putts per round. The only season her putts per round has been better was 2009 – the best year of her career until 2014 – but this season is such a drastic contrast from the last four. Her putting stats dropped dramatically in 2010 and were the worst of her career in 2012. That’s when she went to the heavily criticized tabletop putting style. The results? Her best year putting since 2009, and it’s only improved in 2014. That combined with the best ball striking golf’s ever seen from Wie has resulted in a transcendent year for her career and is why Wie has to feel terrific heading into 2015, whether she ends up winning the Race to the CME Globe or not. Even after two months on the shelf, her game’s been consistent throughout the entire year. She currently ranks third in the Rolex Player of the Year standings, fourth in Race to the CME Globe points, third in scoring average (69.71), and third on the money list ($1,841,776). If this play continues into the CME Group Tour Championship, Wie could take home the biggest prize of all in 2014 – the inaugural Race to the CME Globe and the accompanying $1 million prize.Since returning from injury:
Driving Accuracy: 68.8% Greens in Regulation: 75.7% Putts Per Round: 28.64 For the Year:
Driving Accuracy: 66% Greens in Regulation: 77% Putts Per Round: 29.87 Link to Article:www.lpga.com/golf/blogs/2014/11/by-the-numbers-wie.aspx
