INAUGURAL ROLEX ANNIKA MAJOR AWARD TO BE DECIDED AT THE EVIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The final major of the 2014 LPGA season kicks off this week in Evian Les Baines, France and there is more on the line than just a major title. The first ever winner of the Rolex Annika Major Award will be decided on Sunday at The Evian Championship. The award will honor the player who has the most outstanding record in the five major championship during a current LPGA Tour season and in order to take home the award, a player must win one of those major championships.
Michelle Wie currently leads the standings with 84 points following her victory at the U.S. Women’s Open and her runner-up finish at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Wie is slated to be back in action this week for the first time since early August. The four-time LPGA winner has been sidelined for close to five weeks with a stress reaction in the index finger of her right hand.
But Wie has plenty of competition for the award. Sitting just 10 points behind Wie is Rolex Rankings No. 2 Inbee Park, who recently won the Wegmans LPGA Championship, and Lexi Thompson sits in third with 68 points. This year’s RICOH Women’s British Open winner, Mo Martin, will not be in the field in Evian due to a thumb injury she has been battling in recent weeks.
While Wie, Park & Thompson have already put themselves in contention for the award with a major victory this season, there are a few other players who could etch their name as the inaugural winner with a victory at The Evian Championship. Stacy Lewis, Shanshan Feng, Suzann Pettersen and Brittany Lincicome are all in the running for this prestigious honor.

MICHELLE WIE RETURNS TO ACTION
It’s been a little over a month since LPGA fans last saw Michelle Wie in action but the two-time win- ner this year will make her return to competition this week at The Evian Championship. Wie will be vying for her second major victory of the season after sitting out for five weeks due to a stress reac- tion in her right index finger. Wie last played at the Meijer LPGA Classic in early August where she had to withdraw during the first round due to the injury.

Wie (finger) set to return at

Michelle Wie is on track to being cleared by doctors to make her return to competition at next week’s Evian Championship in France after missing the last month with a finger injury.
“Michelle has listened to the advice of her doctors and her recovery process is going well,” IMG spokesman Mike Scanlan said. “She expects to play the Evian Championship next week.”
Wie, who broke through to win the U.S. Women’s Open in June, withdrew after nine holes of the Meijer Classic with a finger injury on Aug. 7. It was diagnosed as a “stress reaction” in the bone of her right index finger. She hasn’t played since.
David Leadbetter, Wie’s swing coach, said she began hitting full shots this week.
“She’s going to play,” Leadbetter said. “There’s going to be some rust, and I think the expectations should be low, but she’s excited to get back to playing.”
Leadbetter has been traveling overseas this past week, with trips to China and England. While he hasn’t been able to work with Wie since she began hitting balls again, Wie has been sending him videos of her swing.
"She is only going at it at about 90 percent, but she looks pretty good,” Leadbetter said.
Wie first felt a twinge of pain in her finger hitting out of a divot while playing the Marathon Classic in Toledo, Ohio, in the middle of July. Leadbetter said the pain got worse and was sharp by the time she teed it up at the Meijer Classic.
“She learned from the past that she needs to take time off when she’s having issues like that,” Leadbetter said.

Wie builds golf strength, just in time for Evian

Michelle Wie is working up to 18 holes. She played five holes on Monday, 13 on Tuesday and hopes to get to 18 by Thursday. It’s an understandable goal, considering that Round 1 of the Evian Championship – the fifth and final major championship of the LPGA season – begins in two days.
“I’m definitely one club less, not hitting it as far as I want to,” said Wie, who is coming off of an acute stress fracture in her right index finger. “But at the same time, I’m just really excited that I can hit balls, that I can come out here and play.”
For the past two majors, the LPGA has tried to get this season’s major-championship winners on an interview podium at the same time. Injuries, however, have conspired against media officials. On Tuesday in France, Lexi Thompson, Inbee Park and Wie set up the Evian Championship without Ricoh Women’s British Open winner Mo Martin, who is back home in California rehabbing an injured thumb. A sidelined Wie visited Disneyland during last month's LPGA Championship.
While Park, the recent winner in Pittsford, N.Y., is an easy favorite this week, all eyes will be on Wie, who withdrew from the Meijer LPGA Classic after nine holes Aug. 7 and hasn’t competed since.
Wie, who was in a splint for two weeks and then killed time painting at her home studio, started putting in late August and began hitting full shots Sept. 2.
“I kind of learned my lesson a couple years ago,” said Wie, 24, “so I just decided to listen to the doctor this time and take things pretty slowly.
“I’m extremely excited to be here and can’t wait to tee it up.”
A two-time winner on the LPGA this season, Wie failed to carry any momentum from her U.S. Women’s Open victory beyond the next week in Arkansas, where she contended and ultimately tied for eighth. She missed the cut in her next two starts – including the Women’s British Open – and then withdrew in Michigan.
Wie tied for second at the tour’s most scenic stop in her first two appearances at the Evian, in 2005 and ’06. She said the greens this year are “rolling perfectly” and praised the grounds crew for overcoming a particularly wet summer.
“It’s probably my ninth time here or so,” Wie said of Evian-les-Bains in the French Alps, “and every time I come here, it still takes my breath away.”
