WINNING WIE-KEND?Michelle Wie’s sitting in prime position to secure her first multiple win season heading into the weekend at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. Wie, a three-time career winner, fired a 4-under-par 67 to put her just one back of co-leaders Hee Young Park and Shanshan Feng.
“That would be a lot of fun,” Wie said. “I definitely got close a lot of times here in Canada and it would mean a lot. But it’s a long way until Sunday and I’m really just going to go out there and just focus on tomorrow’s round.”
It wasn’t near as windy Friday as Thursday’s first round, but Wie said the wind was constantly changing and it was difficult to figure out which direction the wind was actually going Friday. Still, one back heading into the weekend after hitting 17 greens, it’s hard not to like where she sits.
“It felt good. It was a little bit slow today, just didn’t get the ball close to the hole on my second shot,” Wie said. “I still can’t complain, still in contention and excited for the weekend.”
Wie’s second career win came in Canada at the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open.
Rolex Rankings No. 10 MICHELLE WIE Q. Good round out there. How did it feel?
MICHELLE WIE: It felt good. It was a little bit slow today, just didn't get the ball close to the hole on my second shot. I still can't complain, still in contention and excited for the weekend.
Q. (Inaudible)
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah, I'm having a lot of fun. It's really fun to be in contention so I'm really excited to come out here tomorrow.
Q. A lot of the girls were saying it was a grind today. Did you find that?
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah, somewhat. Just wasn't getting anything close to the hole today. Just got a lot of putts close. But yeah, it's not a really easy golf course. Definitely the wind was changing a lot today. There was a lot of times where I thought it was downwind and it was into the wind, so that was definitely difficult.
Q. With next to no wind, could you be a little bit more aggressive today out there?
MICHELLE WIE: It was just like I said, you know, it wasn't blowing as hard but it definitely wasn't staying in one direction. It was definitely blowing around. There were a lot of shots where I wasn't sure what the wind was doing so that kind of affected it quite a bit.
Q. Did that come into play on the 18th tee at all because I think you had a conversation whether to use driver or 3 wood and I think you ended up going with driver and you put it through the end of the fairway.
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah, you know, I definitely that's one of the holes where it's kind of iffy, it's kind of in between. I didn't think it was going to get that far but there's a lot of second hole shots. The third hole I came up short of the green, it just switched direction. It gets tricky out there with the wind.
Q. I know we talked about getting win number two in the season, you said it would mean a lot. Having one win's great but having two in one season, join the two win club. What would it mean to get another win here in Canada?
MICHELLE WIE: That would be a lot of fun. I definitely got close a lot of times here in Canada and it would mean a lot. But it's a long way until Sunday and I'm really just going to go out there and just focus on tomorrow's round.
Q. With as many birdie possibilities (inaudible) you can't really play defensive out here, can you?
MICHELLE WIE: No, no. I mean, you definitely aren't playing defensive. That's kind of why I hit driver on 18 and kind of have to keep playing aggressive. Birdies and pars. You have to keep making birdies because pars aren't enough.
Q. Can I ask about the leg?
MICHELLE WIE: It's fine, it's just tape.
