Thanks for the great report, LoJo! ;D I believe they said on the broadcast at one point that she led the tournament in greens hit...which really puts the putting issues in perspective...she's giving herself chances... ...let me ask this... ...is this going to be an ongoing issue...yes, she has the off-season to work on putting...but it seems to me that all the different putting techniques she's been trying tell me that it's mental...she's not going for it, so to speak...there's no conviction in her stroke...she's hitting it and kinda hoping it goes in... ...so if that's true...and maybe it is and maybe it isn't...does there need to be a new voice to come in and help with putting...maybe not even a putting "guru" but a former player or someone like that...or another current player she's willing to get advice from...just like Tiger took advice from Steve Stricker during President's Cup... I know some of you are not golfers, or are very occasional golfers, and perhaps you've not experienced the maddening frustration of a balky putting stroke. It's just the worst possible frustration in golf. Hit it great off the tee...hit great iron shots to the green....make great bunker shots....make great escapes from trouble....and DOINK!!!.....you can't get it in the hole. It's enough to cause one to snap the putter over your leg, or throw it in the nearest pond! And some have done that!!
Poor putting is mostly mental. We often hear about young people putting lights out and being aggressive knocking the first putt 6 feet past because they know they'll make the comeback. And the joke is that they don't think about it and haven't yet learned that they can miss it.
Every miss, every frustrating misread, every poor distance control will add to the frustration and ...most importantly...to the erosion of confidence. And will lead to a tentative stroke.
And what is frustration and/or confidence? Mental!
This is where Michelle is right now. She has no confidence in her ability to get the ball in the hole. In my opinion, she's become too mechanical with this goofy style she's using. Mechanical means you have to "think" about it and not "feel" it. Great putters have great feel. She's lost that. I believe she was a good putter when she was younger, but she now knows that she can (and does) miss them, and doubt has gotten into her head.
I honestly don't see how she's putting any better with this belly style than she did with the traditional style. So, is it her mechanics or is it her mind? My opinion....mind.
Dr. Bob Rotella, the sports psychologist, wrote a book (I have the audio tape and went to sleep many a night with it), called "Putting Out of Your Mind." The title is a play on words about taking the MIND out of the PUTTING. Anyway....Michelle needs to get with someone to help her not necessarily with her stroke, but with her mental approach to putting. She was good...and now she's not. She can get back to good!!
I don't think she's going to find anything from her friends on the LPGA, but there are a coupla other "gurus" out there. Stan Utley is one who's highly thought of. There's also some German guy who works with the Euro Tour players. But what she needs from someone mostly is to regain her confidence so she can rid her mind of these putting demons!

MIchelle is trying not too miss, when she should be trying to make. This happens when you have no confidence, I don't think a putting guru is the answer. everyone says "her mechanics are really good" I think it's a mental thing. and once she has her confidence back, I think she will be a good putter.

Hello Wie Nation: Lojo…Excellent report…excellent…excellent observations… You’re report tells me Michelle is ready to blossom into the golfer that Wie Nation is and has been expecting… Smiller, reported that michelle was gaining control of her fade shots…and I agree…With the disappearance of the hand and arm motions after her tee and approach shots …she’s not thinking and rehashing her tee and approach shots… Confidence… Last two weeks stats: Green in regulations: Before Ochoa’s tournament…Michelle ranked 24...gir percentage 0.690 After Ochoa’s tournament…Michelle ranked 19...gir percentage 0.697 A jump in five spots. Driving accuracy: Before Ochoa…ranked…133...fairways…367...Possible fair..619..per 0.593 After Ochoa…ranked…133...fairways…434...Poss. Fair…731..per 0.594 No change…from her demeanor…before tee and approach shot…confidence.. Putts per green: Before Ochoa…ranked 72..Gir putts..1,018..Gir..551...ave..1.85 After Ochoa…ranked 59..Gir putts..1,198...Gir..652...1.84 A jump in thirteen spots… An increase in greens per regulation…but a drop in putts per green Very interesting… From you’re excellent report on her demeanor from tee to green…. I come to the conclusion…Michelle is frustrated with her putting…But, but is not stressed out about her putting…To me…she seems to have the situation well in hand…All it takes is time and practice… Lojo…one more question.. Bobawiefan… what’s with the third degree…Leave Lojo alone…Please…Please, just one more question…OK…but only one… ;D ;D ;D Lojo…if by chance, after Michelle made a birdie putt, did you notice, if their was a fist pump,…the degree of intensity in her fist pumps…was it low, medium or of high intensity?? Going out on a limb…it is my guess…her fist pumps were timid…a reflection of her putting… And when these fist pumps become high intensity…Michelle will have blossomed into the golfer Wie Nation has been waiting for. Once a again Lojo…thank you for an excellent live report Got to love wie golf bobawiefan

Lots of posters commenting on Michelle’s putting, so just how does it compare to other players, I believe that the Golf channel provides a skewed perspective , they seem to only show Michelle missing short putts, out of 120-130 putts we only get to see 3 or 4.
The LPGA has some statistics on putting, GIR percentages and also percentage of putts made on greens reached in regulation. Now as with most statistics we only get a partial story, we do not know the distance to the hole for any putts, however assuming that players over one year average the same distance, then we can evaluate just how well Michelle would have done if she had say been able to match Kerr’s conversion rate of 1.7 putts per GIR. The table below shows the data for the leaders in 2012. Some of the results are interesting compared to Michelle, Kerr had a 1.75 rate, if Michelle had matched that rate she would have need 33 fewer putts on greens reached in regulations, now this is over an entire year, so for 20 tournaments Michelle could have saved 1.7 putts per event, this is an average so it we probably double that figure since it is relevant only when a player is contending. Surprising is the fact that, for this analysis alone Creamer, and Nordqvist have performed about the same as Michelle In conclusion for Michelle to start the long march towards reaching number one status, she will need to improve by one less putt per round on average, I am sure that she will show this type of improvement next year...

In regards to Michelle's having a fever, I had not read anything about that. She was not coughing on Weds during the Pro Am, nor on Friday. She was coughing a lot on Saturday.
Also, I was not at the green on #17 when Michelle's ball was stopped by that rake in the rough between the bunkers! I saw it remotely as the t.v. audience did, and...as you wondered....I wondered too how on earth she ended up playing from the bunker. She would have gotten relief from the rake (movable obstruction), and would have taken a drop. If the ball had rolled into the bunker, she would have been required to redrop. If it again rolled into the bunker, she would have placed the ball where it last hit the ground. I did NOT understand how she ended up playing from the bunker! I asked around and no one knew....grrrr. The only thing I can imagine is that after her placing the ball....and it was "in play"....perhaps it later rolled out of its position and into the bunker. In any case....her double on the hole was not a result of her bunker shot, but of her poor 3 putt after the bunker shot.
She did hit a great bunker shot on #18 to have an easy par putt.
One other just sort of "fun" observation. Michelle's water bottle that she keeps in her bag is a Red plastic McDonald's bottle. So, every time she takes a drink, she's flashing the McD's golden arches. haha

Once a again Lojo…thank you for an excellent live report Got to love wie golf bobawiefan Bob.... MW did do some fist pumping after particularly good birdie putts or even after difficult par saving putts. They weren't "over the top" ones, but were just spontaneous displays of being happy with the result. She occasionally fist bumped her caddie on the sidelines too.
Mom and Dad Wie are quite vocal in the gallery when Michelle makes a birdie or makes a great save. If you're standing next to either one of them (particularly Mom Bo), her enthusiasm is sometimes a bit alarming! haha This is nothing new, as I've been standing near them many times at various tourneys. They are very cordial and polite people, but tend not to get involved with any in the galleries....and rightly so.
Fans also were clapping loudly at good birdie putts and yelling "YES!" etc. All the fans were really trying to send some good vibes her way. Conversely, there were some "groans" of disappointment when she missed putts.

On #17 she missed the green on the right by a yard, fade shot , balled rolled down towards the bunker and stopped against a rake on steep grassy slope, she dropped and the balled rolled into the bunker again on a steep slope and had to be played where it stopped, the bunker shot was very steep and ball ended 15 ft from the hole with a downhill putt, first putt took a big break and she missed the 4 footer for a double bogey, number 18 same issue faded the ball . missed by a yard into a bunker on the right, but hit a great bunker shot to 2 feet and made the putt to save par.

Hi ya Smiller...terriffic Post by you...I have always thought that although Wiesy's Putting is the GREATEST, that she is "NOT AS BAD as it is made out to be...plus if you factor in the "Wiesy Microscope" of course, it is something that Everyone points out...plus Wiesy gets to be on TV a lot so "More of the Microscope watching"....it seems like Wiesy misses a lot of makeable putts on TV, and EVERYONE Picks up on that...but other golfers miss a lot also, and not too much is said....
but in the grand scheme of things, I like that everyone picks up on her flaw in putting...this means that the Kid is still a NEEDLE of Interest...people have their theories and opinions and all of this Keeps Wiesy in the Media Spotlight and attention....this is good for her Endorsements and Media Visablilty
anyway...have a good day smiller...see ya...ahhh if Wiesy could only putt like Cristie...hmmm

Many Thanks to everyone who wrote the wonderful posts on this thread..........it is a great pleasure for me to read thee posts in peace and harmony......and ONLY have to think about our Michelle, and how she is doing before, during and after tournaments..........this is what I have been waiting for.......and now, thanks to bangkokbobby..........it is here........thanks also to LoJo...........and her on-course reporting.........where we can see and understand what Michelle is doing when she is NOT on TV........now about that 17th hole........smiller explained what happened........but that looks like she did NOT get a favorable ruling.........isn't she suppossed to get her 3 drops.........and THEN be able to place the ball where it lied?.........but now that I think about it.........even if she did get a par on that hole.........she still would have finished in 6th place.....by herself.........and the only difference would have been........that her check would have been a little bigger than it was.........like she NEEDS the money?........and just when she gets back to Stanford.........and Thanksgiving with her family........then she has to fly to LA for the LA Auto show on Saturday.........and miss the Fighting Irish game with her Stanford Cardinal team.........BTW....Happy Thanksgiving to all on this site........we all have a lot to be thankful for..........including being able to root for this Fine young woman - Michelle Wie!!!............
