Wie withdraws, citing illness, during 2nd round
By Julie Williams
Michelle Wie did not return to Sebonack on a dreary Saturday morning to complete her second round at the U.S. Women’s Open.
Play was suspended late Friday evening because of fog, leaving Wie one hole to play. She withdrew before play resumed Saturday morning, citing illness.
Wie, whose first-round 80 included a quadruple-bogey on the 10th hole (her first), was 3 over through 17 holes on Friday. At 11 over for the tournament, she would not have made the cut.
This year marked the 10th Women’s Open start for Wie, 23. She also withdrew in 2007 and missed the cut in 2008 and 2010.
Candie Kung, who had three holes remaining in her second round, also has withdrawn. Kung was 11 over with three holes to play.

Wie doesn't complete Rd. 2; WDs with illness

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Michelle Wie and Candie Kung did not return for the resumption of the suspended second round Saturday at the U.S. Women’s Open.
Wie withdrew citing illness, according to the USGA. Kung’s WD came with no reason cited. Wie had just one hole to play Saturday morning but was 11 over par with no chance of making the cut.
As a 16-year-old, Wie tied for third at the U.S. Women’s Open at Newport Country Club. Her record since in the championship reads like this: WD, MC, DNP, MC, T-55, T-35, WD.
While Wie looked like she was making a turnaround this season with back-to-back T-9 finishes at Shoprite and the Wegmans LPGA Championship, she now has failed to make the weekend in her last two events. She has failed to make seven cuts this season. Wie’s hopes of making the U.S. Solheim Cup will require a strong rally with just three chances left for her to qualify. She’s 12th on the U.S. points list and must be among the top eight to automatically qualify.
