Sophie Gustafson and Suzann PettersenOne of my favorite players is Sophie Gustafson. During Europe's 2011 Solheim Victory at Killeen Castle, Sophie gave a very inspiring interview. Sophie has avoided giving interviews and speaking on-camera due to a stuttering problem. I give her a lot of credit for letting her guard down in the following video. Nobody (with a conscience) will make fun of her. Quite the contrary, at least for me. This intimate video makes me even MORE of a fan.

Good article by Karla.
Along with Michelle, Sophie has been at the top of the list of my favorite golfers for quite a few years....even "pre-Wie."
I first met Sophie at the Solheim Cup at Interlachen (Minnesota) in 2002. Some of us fans were talking to several European Solheim members and having a great time laughing and asking questions. Carin Koch, Maria Hjorth, Suzann Pettersen (she was a rookie), Karin Icher, and Sophie. I must admit I'm a fan of the Euro Team in Solheim.
Anyway, Sophie joined in on all the laughing and so on, but never said a word of course. I already knew of her stutter. She mentions in the article about her winning the Chick-Fil-A tourney and Nancy Lopez giving the acceptance speech for her. That was really such a great thing that Nancy did and with such grace. She said something like "Sophie's English is sometimes not so good, so she's asked me to accept this trophy for her"....and so on. Of course, Soph's English is perfect, but no one really knew of her stutter then.
Anyway, I've been a huge fan of hers for a over a decade now. Last month at the Titleholders, I followed her in the Pro Am, and talked with her between holes on a long walk from green to the next tee. She's very comfortable with herself and ...yes....she still stutters quite severely. But, she confidently speaks and just lets the stutter happen. I think she knows that her fans "know" so she probably isn't bothered by it. She's not so bad with people she knows.
What a great person....and she has a wicked sense of humor! Sophie Rules!!

Farewell to a legend
Suzann Pettersen of Norway embraces recently retired golfer Sophie Gustafson of Sweden on the 18th hole after shooting 20 strokes under par to win during the final round of the Safeway Classic on September 1, 2013 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon.
Farewell to a legend… This week, the LPGA Tour said farewell to a legend as Sophie Gustafson announced after Saturday’s second-round of the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola that she would be stepping away from the LPGA.
Gustafson joined the LPGA Tour in 1998 and recorded five career victories. She was also a member of eight European Solheim Cup Teams boasting a record of 13-12-6. While Gustafson’s impressive resume on Tour is hard to ignore, perhaps she is better known for her attitude outside of the ropes.
Gustafson has fought a lifelong battle with stuttering but served as an inspiration to many at the 2011 Solheim Cup when she gave her first-ever TV interview. One of the most admirable players on the LPGA Tour, Gustafson was chosen as the 2012 Heather Farr Perseverance Award honoree by the LPGA and the 2012 Ben Hogan Award from the Golf Writers Association of America.
Fellow Swede and teammate on two European Solheim Cup Teams, Anna Nordqvist looked-up to Gustafson strived to follow in the footsteps of Gustafson from the early age of 12. The duo even teamed-up to win the 2011 European Nations Cup for Sweden.
“I mean, Sophie Gustafson was out there when I grew up,” said Nordqvist. “I remember I was probably 12, 13, my family and I would go up to Stockholm to watch her play in a Ladies European Tour event. She's always been a great player for Swedish golf and really kicked off the Swedish era. We had good players to look up to. I've been fortunate to play with Sophie Gustafson on two Solheim Cups. She just brings out the best in me. Me and Sophie actually won the European Nations Cup together as a two man team in 2010 or 2011, so I sure have a lot of good memories of Sophie.”
Quote of the Day: “Well, definitely all my previous Solheim partners retired, so I guess I'm next on that list.” Suzann Pettersen joking on close friend and European Solheim Cup teammate Sophie Gustafson announcing her LPGA retirement.
