LORENA OCHOA GETS HER OWN BARBIE
By Amy Rogers LPGA March 07, 2018
Lorena Ochoa continues to break barriers.
Tuesday afternoon, social media erupted with the news that the World Golf Hall of Fame member is getting her own Barbie doll. Announced ahead of Thursday’s International Women’s Day, Ochoa is one of 17 historical and modern-day female role models who inspired the creation of the one-of-a kind dolls.
“As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie will be honoring its largest line up of role models timed to the International Women’s day because we know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” said Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Barbie. “Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything.”
The Ochoa doll is one of 14 modern-day role models created through Barbie’s Shero program, which are designed to inspire the next generation of girls. Since her retirement from professional golf in 2007, Ochoa has devoted her life to her family and growing the game of golf in her home country of Mexico. In 2017, Ochoa became the first player from Mexico to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
This year’s honorees include snowboarder Chloe Kim, who won gold at the Olympic games in PyeongChang, wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin and prima ballerina Yuan Tan. Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo and Katherine Johnson were created as part of the new Inspiring Women doll line series.
