blog: Teresa Lu Wins 2016 Daikin Orchid Ladies Golf Tournament, Successfully Defends Title
Teresa Lu
In 2015, Teresa Lu had one of the best years…possibly THE best year…of any player who didn’t win the LPGA of Japan’s (JLPGA) Player of the Year. Lu Xiaoqing won 5 tournaments, including a Major, while setting career best totals in prize money and scoring average. Unfortunately, in terms of POY, those totals were achieved while Bo-Mee Lee was having a season for the ages. With the 2016 JLPGA season now officially with one tournament in the books, Teresa has started the same way she did in 2015, by winning the Daikin Orchid Ladies Golf Tournament. She becomes the second player, after Yuri Fudoh, to win Daikin Orchid twice and the first to do so in back to back years. She’s also the first to win this tournament as a four-round event. Her 4-under 68 left Lu with a 8-under 280 overall score. That was good enough for a 3 shot victory over 2nd place Ritsuko Ryu. Like the great champion Teresa is, she pulled out her best when she needed, birdying 15, 16 and 17 coming down the stretch. She has now reached double digits with her 10th JLPGA victory. Lu banks 21.6 million yen, just shy of $190,000 USD. This year’s Salonpas Cup will be very intereresting as Teresa needs only that Major to complete the JLPGA Career Grand Slam. Hopefully, JLPGA fans will be treated to another year of fireworks from Lu and Lee. Bo-Mee finished in solo 6th place. I’m definitely in for another round of Teresa vs Bo-Mee. Maybe this time it’ll be the Taiwanese star Lu who captures Player of the Year.
1 TERESA LU (-8)
2 RITSUKO RYU (-5)
T3 AYAKA MATSUMORI (-4)
T3 YUKARI NISHIYAMA (-4)
T3 JIYAI SHIN (-4)
6 BO-MEE LEE (-2)
