In 2013, for the first time in the history of the Solheim Cup, a European Team has captured the Cup on American soil. Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Colorado Golf Club to capture a 1-up victory over Michelle Wie assuring the Europeans would retain the Cup for the first time since the biennial event began in 1990.

A rookie and captain's pick in 2009, Michelle Wie found success with each teammate she was paired with in her first Solheim Cup. Wie and Morgan Pressel halved their match in the Friday fourball, she dominated 5&4 with Christina Kim during the Saturday fourball then turned around and won 1 up with Cristie Kerr in the afternoon. Wie capped off her week by defeating Solheim Cup veteran Helen Alfredsson who was making her eighth Solheim appearance, 1 up in the Sunday singles.

A Leg Up
Michelle Wie is taking in every moment of this Solheim Cup perhaps a little more than her previous three appearances. That’s because the Hawaii native knows how close she was to having injuries force her to miss the opportunity to represent her country at this year’s Cup.
Wie’s lingering health issues have been a storyline throughout the 2015 LPGA season, as she’s battled bursitis in her left hip and a sore left ankle. The injuries caused Wie to limp through many rounds and sometimes to even withdraw from events due to the pain. One person who admitted to being very concerned about Wie’s health was Team USA Captain Juli Inkster, who checked in with Wie so often that she joked Wie is now in her favorites list on her phone.
“Juli and I have had a lot of talks this year,” Wie said with a laugh. “I would come back from the doctor and get a call from Juli Inkster….There are some conversations when I talked to Juli, honestly I told her I don’t know if I could play or not.”
The good news for Wie is that she is here and feeling better than ever. Thanks to some treatment and her continuous rehab, Wie does not seem concerned at all about injuries impacting her this week. She said she played 36 holes in a day prior to the Evian Championship last week and would be willing to play five matches if that is what her captain wants.
“It really has been night and day,” Wie said of how she is feeling. “I played last week with no pain, knock on wood. And this week, too. So every day I’ve been really diligent about my rehab routine. That has been my number one priority. And I have a good routine going. I feel great as soon as I check off all of that stuff. I feel really good this week. I’m excited to be here. I’m just ecstatic to be here.”

Despite lack of reps, Wie looks to come alive at Solheim Cup

ST. LEON-ROT, Germany – Michelle Wie has completed 72 holes in only three tournaments since mid-May. And yet, the expectations for Wie at this week’s Solheim Cup are as high as the sides of her high-top shoes.
Why?
Because Wie comes to life at this event. Fans saw it in 2009, when she first gelled with her LPGA peers and went 3-0-1 at Rich Harvest Farms. The Solheim Cup means as much to Wie as anyone else on this team, but when she rolled out of the doctor’s office in early August in a wheelchair, the situation looked grim.
“I couldn’t walk for five days,” said Wie, who’d just had a second injection in her left hip. Inkster by now had Wie listed as a favorite on her phone and called to get an update.
“Honestly right now, I don’t know,” Wie said.
From the start of Wie’s hip/ankle issues, she made it a point to be “real” with her beloved Solheim Cup captain.
“I never wanted to give her false hope,” she said.
Wie changed her swing, wore a boot, had new orthotics made for her shoes. She’s been uber-diligent with her rehab routine and calls the progress made in the past month “night and day.”
Her presence in Germany is significant. There’s an intimidation factor with Wie that few other players possess. On a course as long and wet as St. Leon-Rot Golf Club, she’ll have an immediate advantage.
Her biggest issue coming into this week is reps. Inkster liked what she saw from Wie at The Evian Championship: 14 birdies and two eagles in the last 54 holes.
Plus, there are so many positive memories to draw upon. At the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst, Wie called upon shots she’d hit at the Solheim Cup to quell the pressure. Those times in red, white and blue when she got the shakes and couldn’t breathe yet pulled off the improbable.
One go-to shot came in 2009, when Wie faced Helen Alfredsson in Sunday singles. Alfie chipped in on the first hole and then hit it to 6 feet for her second shot on a par 5.
“I’m like damn, this is how it’s going to go today,” Wie thought.
Wie answered with a 5-iron to 4 feet.
She now considers it the shot of her life.
Inkster has her own Wie Solheim highlight – an iron she smoked to 12 feet – that stands out in her memory bank.
“I still believe that she hasn't even scratched her surface yet,” Inkster said of Wie’s potential.
For two years Inkster has delivered the message that the Americans were going to take their lunch boxes over to Europe and get to work. On Monday, to further drive that point home, she gave her 12 charges a patriotic lunch pale, the blue-collar kind one might see at a construction zone.
Wie, for one, is deeply grateful for the opportunity to work for nothing this week. There’s a confidence in her voice that indicates both excitement and assuredness.
Playing alongside wide-eyed Alison Lee, the only rookie on the team, keeps the experience in focus, Wie said.
So while the fancy shoes and the rainbow-colored hair add an element of fun, the Stanford grad seems ready to dig deep for Team USA. She’ll even go five matches should Inkster make that call.
“Winning is easy,” said Wie. “Winning is always easy. I think losing is when you learn the most about each other, learn the most about yourself.”
It’s time for Wie and Co. to show the world how much they’ve truly grown.

The second match of the morning foursomes on Friday features two teams who can both take advantage of the soft conditions at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot. Lincicome, Wie and Hull all rank in the top 30 in driving distance on the LPGA Tour, and Reid ranks 13th on the LET. While Americans Wie and Lincicome have not been previously paired in Solheim Cup competition, Wie boasts an impressive 3-0 record in foursomes.
Look for Wie and Lincicome to lean on their combined seven Solheim Cup appearances and play aggressive golf against Reid and Hull who are making only their second and third forays respectfully into the matches. While the American duo may have the edge in experience, this match will be full of fireworks. Expect both teams to use their length to generate plenty of birdie opportunities.
