+1 not bad especially when you consider her score from her last event, much improved. Now if she could work out a few more kinks with her putting for round 2 she'd move up the leaderboard. As of now it's pretty bunched up above her.

Michelle needs to get to red numbers tomorrow to be in contention. Putting is her Achilles heel right now and she may have the yips. Those 3-4 foot putts should be gimmie for her but to me like I get this feeling that she will miss them not like when Tiger is putting the same distances. Let's go Michelle!

Well an improvement on her recent form at least. But usual problems remain - only 5 fairways hit on a wide open course - driving distance down so maybe she was using a 3 wood.
And of course the putting once again - I read she's gone back to an old orthodox putter, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. 33 putts isn't going to win anything.
First priority is to make the cut ! After that it's all a bonus....

The driving hole on the back 9 falls off hard to the right. Many players will hit 3 wood/5 wood to keep it left. Why they use this hole for measuring is beyond me. So, the distances are often less than they could be.

Spent the day at the Kraft tournament, round 1: observations and comments are summarized below: Venue and Course Venue is spectacular easy to get to, no on the premises parking, bus parking (5$) this year is along I10, was in the city last year, entry fee is steep (35$), course has narrow enough fairways, water significant only of a few holes, rough is 4 inches uniformly, greens are wide but not deep. Practice Putting Green Very large small practice green near, Michelle is now using a regular putter, has a more upright stance and was getting direct help from David Ledbetter on the green. She was putting very well and look much more at ease, she is playing the ball more forward with a small forward press.
Round First Nine Driving was pretty erratic she was trying to fade the ball and was only partially successful; the iron play from the fairways and out of the rough was remarkable with great distance control, lots of scrambling and accurate chipping and very good putting. Second Nine #10 Drive in a left fairway bunker, close to the lip had to wedge out, hit a great third shot to the green to 8 feet. Then an evil to took over her putting, she went back to centering her ball position, tucked in elbows and quick jab as I saw at the Kia last week. Putt only moved 7 feet and resulted in a bogey. #11 Drive left of fairway, passed the tree line, made a fabulous five wood shot and reached the part 5 in two, ball on back of the green 20 feet from pin. Poor chip ball 7 feet from pin downhill putt. Same bad putting as #10, getting only a par, after chipping from 20 feet, for eagle. Michelle banged her hip in frustration. Only one more poor dive after that the much better driving, slightly improved putting until # 17, reached par 3 9 feet from pin, below the hole, back to evil putting balled drifted to the right 2 feet from hole resulting in a steep side hill lie 2 feet from the hole, more bad putting crouched stance and ball now off her right foot, missed for bogies. The look on her face afterward was hard to watch. #10 killed her drive, 300 yards in fairway, decided to lay up to 125 yards, good wedge 10 ft above the hole, and two putts. David Ledbetter walked the entire round watching every shot. Playing Partner Zero chemistry, no conversation at all, but very polite. Gal played well, she is straight driver and very relaxed on the course, quite long of the tee and a good putter, ironically the way she putts is identical to what Michelle was practicing on the practice green and during the first nine. Fans About 300 fans followed Michelle for the first 9 holes dwindling to 100 later in the day probably due to the heat, was over 90 F, the wind never picked up as was expected. Other players Watched a few other players, Lexi Thompson is very good, but needs better control of her irons, she played with Pressel, must have been frustrating being out driven by 50/60 yards. Expectation Michelle need to improve her driving for round 2, you can only go so far scrambling. If she can stick to her new putting method, she stands a good chance to make the cut.
