Solheim Cup 2017: Team USA rebounds from morning losses to sweep afternoon matches Americans roar back to take all four fourball matches on Friday afternoon at the Solheim Cup and lead the Europeans 5.2-2.5 heading into Saturday’s sessions.by Emily Kay Aug 18, 2017, 8:35pm ED Members of the U.S. Solheim Cup team, favored to retain the Solheim Cup on home turf in Des Moines, put a stunning and disappointing first morning behind them and came out swinging, putting, and roaring back to capture all four afternoon matches and go three points up in the contest, 5.2-2.5, over the visiting Europeans. It was the first U.S. sweep of a Solheim Cup session, and one in which the Europeans never led in any of the matches. The score marks the largest lead after two sessions for the U.S. since 1998. In the marquee match of the afternoon, Kang and Michelle Wie beat Madalene Sagstrom and Jodi Ewart Shadow, 3 and 1, thanks to stellar play from tee to green. The two good friends, both relaxed and passionate, got off to a quick, birdie-birdie start, and had the partisan fans on their feet and cheering from the start. Kang was absolutely on fire, and when she followed up her clutch birdie putt to win the 16th hole by stuffing her tee shot on the par-3 17th, it was all over but the dabbing. Golf Blog - Shirt struggles: Wie wears wrong uniform in win
By Jay Coffin August 18, 2017, 9:26 pm WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Michelle Wie was raring to go. She sat out the morning foursomes Friday at the Solheim Cup but was paired with good friend Danielle Kang in afternoon fourballs with the U.S. trailing by a point. Wie couldn’t wait. Kang had won her match, and both were champing at the bit to lead the red, white and blue in the first match of the session. Kang was on fire. She made everything she looked at. Wie played well, too, and made four birdies. But something was off and Wie never realized it; not until well after she and Kang had dispatched Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Madelene Sagstrom, 3 and 1. Wie was wearing the wrong uniform. She was wearing the uniform designated for the morning matches, not the one the rest of the team was wearing for the afternoon. “I went all day not knowing or noticing,” Wie said. “I was blissfully oblivious I was wearing the wrong outfit. “Yeah, I’m wearing the wrong outfit, and this is not my first Solheim, and the rookie (Kang) is wearing the right outfit.” Said Kang: “I thought you wear the morning outfit if you haven’t played in the morning. OK, I realized, 'No, she’s just in the wrong outfit.' I’m not going to mention that in the middle of the round.” Captain Juli Inkster had only one comment. “Does it surprise you,” she asked. "It didn't surprise me either." Link to article: www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/shirt-struggles-wie-wears-uniform-victory/?cid=rr_trending_p8

Inkster: Women's golf doesn't get credit we're due
By Jay Coffin August 20, 2017, 9:06 pm Golf Central Blog WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Juli Inkster did not waste time championing women’s golf and had no problem telling non-believers what annoys her most about those who don’t appreciate the tour she has loved for more than three decades. “We don’t get what credit we’re due,” she said, with Solheim Cup in hand. “If we play well, the courses are too short. If we don’t play well, we’re not good enough. “These ladies behind me, and even the European team, are amazing golfers. They play with power. They play with finesse … I hope people are starting to recognize how good they are.” Inkster, 57, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, was then asked if she thinks a week like this, where well-played golf was on display for three days, will give women’s golf a noticeable lift. “I just think as women golfers we always get shortchanged and it irks me,” she said. “Even from the PGA Tour down, I just don’t think we get really the respect we deserve. I just think hopefully it goes on and hopefully things start to change, especially in sponsorships. “I just don’t understand how all these companies get away with supporting PGA Tour events and not supporting the LPGA. It makes me a little upset, because I think we’ve got a great product. I think we do a lot of things really good. And I think the golf is fantastic. We deserve our due.” And with that, the captain of the winning U.S. Solheim Cup team was met with applause from all 12 of her players sitting by her side. AMERICANS CONTINUE DOMINANCE, BUT IT AIN'T OVER TILL IT'S OVER
by RON SIRAK August 19, 2017 WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The team sessions that set the stage for Solheim Cup singles – foursomes and four-ball twice each – are an endurance test mentally and physically. Sometimes, players get to Sunday with little left in the gas tank. Europe has to hope the United States has a serious fuel shortage this year. With a record record-tying five-point lead at 10½ to 5½, the Americans will be nearly impossible to catch. But remember all those cheers and the players egging them on? Remember all that dancing and celebrating? While that kind of atmosphere puts you on an adrenaline high, it also takes a lot of you. The crash can be dramatic – and sudden. That likely will be part of what captain Juli Inkster tells her players Sunday morning, reminding them that it ain’t over until it’s over. And, as a player, few ran to the finish line as hard as Inkster. Link to article: www.lpga.com/news/2017-team-usa-continues-domination-saturday-at-solheim-cup

U.S. Solheim challenge: Bringing Inkster back
By Randall Mell August 21, 2017 WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – On second thought, it is time for the LPGA to form a Solheim Cup task force. It’s time to bring together the best and brightest minds in the American women’s game to figure out a way to persuade Juli Inkster to captain the United States team for a third consecutive time. Inkster sounded guardedly open to a possible return when asked after the Americans defeated Europe 16½ to 11½ Sunday, a victory that made Inkster and Judy Rankin the only captains to lead the Americans to victory in back-to-back Solheim Cups, but . . . “I don’t want to go there,” Inkster said. “I would love to do it, but I think there are other people in line that deserve the chance, but I’ll be there with some hugs.” Now that’s a problem that needs to be immediately addressed. No offense to Pat Hurst and Sherri Steinhauer, major champions with winning records in multiple Solheim Cup appearances, logical as potential next ups, but Solheim Cup stock takes a big dive if Inkster doesn’t return. Dottie Pepper would bring star power, if somehow, some way, she was in consideration, which seems highly doubtful, given the hard criticism she has delivered on this generation of American players, and her insistence that her interests continue to lie elsewhere. Nancy Lopez would also bring star power, if she’s interested in a return engagement as captain, after being an assistant to Inkster the last two Solheim Cups, a role that has kept Lopez in touch with today’s players, but she isn’t in that line Inkster’s talking about. Inkster is specially qualified and gifted to keep growing the Solheim Cup’s brand. Gerina Piller said it Sunday. Inkster’s a “freaking rock star" Link to article: www.golfchannel.com/news/randall-mell/us-solheim-challenge-bringing-inkster-back
